A historic meeting took place at the White House. U.S. President Donald Trump met with Syrian President Ahmed Shara. Shara became the first Syrian leader to meet with a U.S. president at the White House, while Washington announced that the Caesar sanctions imposed on Damascus would be suspended, except for transactions related to Iran and Russia, following the meeting.
US President Donald Trump held a closed-door meeting with Syrian President Ahmed Shara at the White House. According to the information note shared by the White House, Syrian President Shara entered the White House at 11:37 local time.
It was noted that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Syrian Foreign Minister Esad Hasan Sheybani, and the US Ambassador to Ankara and Special Representative for Syria Tom Barrack also attended the closed-door meeting.
A FIRST HAS BEEN ACHIEVED
The critical summit also carried historical significance. For the first time, a Syrian head of state met with a US President at the White House.
CAESAR SANCTIONS LIFTED
After the meeting concluded, a notable move came from Washington. The US administration announced that the Caesar sanctions imposed on Syria were suspended, except for transactions related to Iran and Russia.
FIRST STATEMENT FROM SYRIA: A CONSTRUCTIVE MEETING
Syrian Foreign Minister Esad Hasan Sheybani reported that a "constructive" meeting took place between Colani and Trump. In a post on social media platform X, Sheybani stated that the meeting occurred after months of intense preparations.
In his post, Sheybani said, "The Syrian issue was addressed in all its aspects during the meeting. The support for Syria's unity, its reconstruction, and the removal of obstacles to future development were emphasized. The Syrian people always deserve a better future."
SHARA MADE CONTACTS
Meanwhile, Shara met with Brian Mast, one of the prominent figures in the US Congress, during his visit to Washington.
The meeting between Shara and Republican Mast, who plays an important role in the lifting of sanctions on Syria as the Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, took place in the Congress building.

WHAT ARE CAESAR SANCTIONS?
The Caesar sanctions, which the US began to implement against Syria in 2019, included severe economic sanctions against Syria's ousted leader Bashar al-Assad and individuals and institutions connected to him. While Congress's approval is required for the complete lifting of the sanctions, the US President is allowed to suspend the sanctions for national security reasons.
