Comedian Tuba Ulu, who was investigated for her remarks about the Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent during a performance in Istanbul, was released under judicial control after the detention process. Following the developments, Ulu made a statement on her social media account.
"I MAY HAVE MADE A JOKE THAT EXCEEDS ITS PURPOSE"
In her post, Ulu emphasized her belief in humor and expressed that her remarks may have exceeded their intended purpose. She stated the following in her explanation:
“I have always trusted the humor of this country. I actually trusted the intelligence of both the one who makes the humor and the one who accepts it. For this reason, I may have made a joke that has gone too far and exceeded its purpose. I sincerely apologize from the bottom of my heart to everyone I have unintentionally hurt, offended, and saddened.”
"I HAD NO INTENTION TO UPSET ANYONE"
Ulu continued her statement by expressing that the nature of satire can sometimes push boundaries, and she clarified that her intention was not to disturb anyone. She also included the following words in her post:

For this reason, I may have made a joke that has gone too far and exceeded its purpose. Sometimes, it may be necessary to stretch some boundaries for satire, and it can escape the limits for some people. A joke that seems perfectly normal to some can touch the values of others too much. I only want to touch everyone to make them laugh. I had no intention to upset, anger, or disturb anyone. Humor actually exists to compensate for flawed things. Please accept this as a flaw as well.
As someone who has always made an effort to respect everyone's differences, beliefs, sacred values, and our values throughout my life, I am very sorry for the recent situation. I sincerely apologize from the bottom of my heart to everyone I have unintentionally hurt, offended, and saddened.”
AN INVESTIGATION HAD BEEN INITIATED
It was learned that Ulu was detained on the grounds of "using obscene expressions openly" and "insulting historical, national, and spiritual values" due to the remarks she made during her stage performance, as part of the investigation conducted by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office. Ulu was released under judicial control after her procedures.
