WHAT HAPPENED?

The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office had initiated an investigation against Özdağ for the crime of "insulting the president" due to his statements. Özdağ was detained in the evening at a restaurant in Ankara where he was having dinner as part of the initiated investigation.

While being brought from Ankara to the Istanbul Courthouse, the investigation against Özdağ was expanded with the accusation of "publicly inciting hatred and hostility."

Ümit Özdağ, the leader of the Victory Party, was taken to Marmara Prison after the court, to which he was referred with a request for arrest, decided to detain him for the crime of "inciting the public to hatred and hostility."
