In inspections conducted by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change, serious violations in the emission discharge of Bandırma Fertilizer Factories were identified. A fine of 1 million 337 thousand 354 TL was imposed on the factory, which had previously halted its operations, for continuing to pollute the environment. The factory had come into the spotlight during the mucilage crisis for the waste it discharged into the Sea of Marmara.

Bandırma Gübre Fabrikaları A.Ş. (BAGFAŞ) was fined 1 million 337 thousand 354 TL for polluting the environment. Inspections conducted by the Ministry revealed serious violations in emission discharge at the factory. It was reported that the factory, which continues to cause marine and air pollution, will be subject to ongoing inspections.

FACTORY FINED OVER 1 MILLION LIRA

Bandırma Gübre Fabrikaları A.Ş. (BAGFAŞ), operating in the Bandırma district of Balıkesir, was imposed an administrative fine of 1 million 337 thousand 354 TL for continuing to pollute the environment. Inspections conducted by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change and the Balıkesir Provincial Directorate revealed serious violations in the factory's emission discharge.

FACTORY REMEMBERED FOR MUCILAGE CRISIS

While it was stated that inspections will continue, it was expressed that the factory continues to pose a threat regarding marine pollution. Especially during the mucilage crisis, BAGFAŞ came to the forefront with the waste it discharged into the Sea of Marmara, and it is again under scrutiny regarding the discharge of industrial waste into the sea. The waste released by the factory threatens the aquatic ecosystem and biodiversity.

PREVIOUSLY OPERATIONS HAD BEEN SUSPENDED

Despite the pollution issue that has been on the agenda multiple times before, inspections revealed that the factory's operations continue to negatively impact the environment. BAGFAŞ was closed in June 2021 for failing to meet environmental obligations following inspections conducted under the Marmara Sea Action Plan. However, during the elapsed time, the factory continues to make headlines with new fines instead of resolving its air and marine pollution issues.

In addition to marine pollution, the yellow, gray, and black smoke rising from the factory's chimneys continues to pose another threat to the environment. These fumes, which are claimed to contain chemicals, increase air pollution and harm the local ecosystem. While it was stated that inspections will continue, the question of whether stricter measures need to be taken for the future of the Sea of Marmara has once again come to the fore.
