The research team of the Department of Biology at the Graduate School of Hakkari University and the Center for Research and Application of Biological Diversity has discovered a new endemic genus of grasshopper in the Black Sea region.

Professor Dr. Mehmet Sait Taylan, a faculty member from the Hakkari University Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences, Department of Biology, and the Biological Diversity Research and Application Center, is part of a research team that has described a new endemic genus of grasshopper. The new genus, named "Salmanihippus," has been found to be distributed in the mountainous and high-altitude regions of Trabzon, Giresun, and Gümüşhane provinces.
THE GRASSHOPPER IS NAMED AFTER THE PROFESSOR
In the study where morphometric, bioacoustic, and genetic analyses were conducted, the newly discovered genus was named after the late Professor Dr. Selahattin Salman, who conducted research on grasshoppers, particularly in the Eastern Anatolia Region. In addition to Professor Dr. Mehmet Sait Taylan, the research team included Professor Dr. Abbas Mol (Aksaray University), Professor Dr. Deniz Şirin, and Associate Professor Dr. Sertaç Atalay (Namık Kemal University), as well as Professor Dr. Sarp Kaya (Burdur Mehmet Akif Ersoy University).
"ANATOLIA IS AN IMPORTANT REFUGE"
Professor Dr. Taylan stated that Anatolia has been an important refuge during the last glacial cycles and, therefore, has high biodiversity, and that many new taxa could be introduced to the scientific community through new studies.

The newly discovered genus was introduced to the scientific community through the article titled "Anatolia's Hidden Orthopteran Lineage: Discovery of Salmanihippus gen. nov. via Integrative Taxonomy," published in the journal "Zootaxa," which is in the SCI-Expanded category.
