Following the incident, the pilot returned the plane to Toncontin International Airport in Tegucigalpa. The flight was scheduled to go to Roatán on Thursday.
When the plane landed, National Police teams sprang into action and apprehended the suspect without any casualties.
After the terrifying moments, passengers were evacuated from the ATR 72 aircraft and directed to another plane to reach their destination.
It is still unknown how the unidentified suspect managed to bring a weapon onto the plane. No statement has yet been made by CM Airlines and TagAirlines, which operate on this route with ATR 72 aircraft.
A local citizen commented, "Passenger screening at the airport must be very inadequate; it is very dangerous for something like this to happen during a flight," while another person asked, "How was he able to board the plane with a gun in the first place?"
This news came while search efforts were ongoing for a plane that disappeared from radar while heading to Nome, Alaska. Search operations were initiated to find a Bering Air flight that was scheduled to go from Unalakleet to Nome at 4:00 PM on Thursday, carrying nine passengers and a pilot. The Nome Volunteer Fire Department is conducting an active search in the area extending from Nome to White Mountain.
