Police officer Muharrem Giyar, who killed his wife and children with a gun in Antalya, was sentenced to three times aggravated life imprisonment. No reduction was applied to the sentence. Giyar claimed that his wife had psychological disorders.

HE KILLED HIS WIFE AND 2 CHILDREN WITH A GUN

The incident occurred on November 12, 2025, around 5:00 PM in a two-story house on 1964 Street in the Varsak Demirel neighborhood of the Kepez district. Police officer Muharrem Giyar shot his wife Fatma and his children Meral Ebrar and Merve with a gun. Many police teams were dispatched to the address after neighbors reported hearing gunshots. The investigation revealed that the mother and two children had lost their lives. Giyar, who was detained by his colleagues, was arrested.

HE CLAIMED HIS WIFE HAD PSYCHOLOGICAL DISORDERS

A case was opened against Muharrem Giyar at the 6th Heavy Penal Court for 'deliberately killing his wife' and 'deliberately killing his offspring who are children' with a request for three times aggravated life imprisonment. In his statement in the indictment, defendant Giyar stated that his wife had been experiencing psychological problems for 10 years and had been hospitalized for treatment twice, saying, "My wife had a sleep problem for about a week. She not only did not sleep but also did not let me and the children sleep. I noticed that she was not taking her medication. She was making many unfounded statements that I was sexually abusing my own children. I could not resist and took my service weapon from the closet in the bedroom. We were in the bedroom. As I was leaving through the door, I fired a shot at her right leg first. After she fell to the ground, I shot her in the head. My children heard the noise and came to the corridor. I do not remember the rest," he said.

DEFENDANT IN FRONT OF THE JUDGE FOR THE FIRST TIME

Defendant Muharrem Giyar appeared before the judge for the first time at the 6th Heavy Penal Court. In his defense, Muharrem Giyar said, "My wife is my uncle's daughter; she sent a poem from her mother's phone in 2011. This is how we started to meet. Then we decided to get married. I graduated from the police academy with honors. I had the right to be assigned to the area I wanted. My wife's family wanted me to choose Antalya. During the wedding process, we went to a jeweler for shopping. My wife wanted us to buy the jewelry she liked. My father said it should be economical because the wedding would be expensive. My wife got angry at this and threw the gold on the floor in the shop. Later, we got married. This time, relatives called and pressured us, asking, 'Aren't you having children?' In 2015, my wife became pregnant. During this process, I thought my wife's psychological state would improve. She was preparing food and insulting me by saying, 'May I be poisoned.'

"MY WIFE THOUGHT I HAD A RELATIONSHIP WITH OTHERS"

Stating that they went to a private hospital during his wife's pregnancy, Giyar said, "My wife told me, 'Why are you bringing me to a private hospital? You have a relationship with the doctor. Otherwise, you wouldn't pay.' So I started taking her to the state hospital. Then my daughter was born. My wife constantly thought I had a relationship with others," he said.

Noting that his wife had previously received treatment in the psychiatry department, Giyar said, "My wife's family also knew that she had psychological issues. She wanted a second child, and I said, 'You will be sick again,' and I did not want it. This time, she insulted me regarding my manhood. The day before the incident, we wanted to admit her to the hospital at Akdeniz University. On the way back, she caused me to have an accident. She choked me in the car. The next day, she constantly accused me of actions I did not commit at home," he said.

'I AM GUILTY, I REGRET'

In response to the court's question, 'Did you apply violence to your wife?' the defendant said, "I did not apply any violence to my wife. She generally applied violence to the children. There was no situation reported to the police regarding the incidents between us. I am guilty. I regret. My wife disturbed my psychology. In a way, she brought me to this point herself."

POLICE OFFICER SENTENCED TO 3 TIMES AGGRAVATED LIFE IMPRISONMENT

The court decided to sentence Muharrem Giyar to three times aggravated life imprisonment. No reduction was applied to the defendant's sentence.
