A police officer, Sanjay Roy, who was on trial for sexual assault and murder against an intern doctor at a state hospital in India, has been sentenced to life imprisonment. The case regarding the incident that occurred last year at RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata, West Bengal, has concluded. The court, presided over by Judge Anirban Das, ruled that police officer Roy, found guilty in an incident that sparked nationwide protests, should be punished with life imprisonment. Judge Das stated that the second-degree evidence corroborated the allegations against Roy. The defendant, Roy, claimed that he was framed and requested clemency. Considering the federal police's request for the death penalty, Judge Das stated, "I do not see this as a rare crime. Life imprisonment, meaning imprisonment until death," was the decision. Doctors who organized protests due to the incident declared, "Protests will continue until justice is served." The 31-year-old intern doctor was sexually assaulted and murdered while resting in the hospital's seminar room after a 36-hour shift. Following the discovery of the doctor’s body in a semi-nude state by colleagues, protests erupted nationwide, and doctors went on strike at the call of the Indian Medical Association (IMA). One hospital staff member related to the incident was also arrested. The investigation conducted by Kolkata police was transferred to the Federal Bureau of Investigation due to public criticism regarding the "cover-up and mismanagement of the attack."
