A patient with schizophrenia, N.K., who was staying at a private care center for the disabled in Kütahya, gouged out the eyes of S.Ç., who was bedridden and also staying in the same hospital. S.Ç., who completely lost her eyesight, had a niece who said, "He entered my aunt's room, got on top of her, and gouged out her eyes in 29 seconds." Additionally, it was revealed that N.K. had killed his grandmother with an axe, gouged out the eyes of another patient, and attempted to gouge out the eyes of yet another person with a toothbrush.

A woman named N.K. (41), a schizophrenia patient staying at a private care center for the disabled in the Yoncalı neighborhood of Kütahya, gouged the eyes of S.Ç. (47), a bedridden woman staying in the adjacent room, in June. After the attack, S.Ç. was taken to Kütahya City Hospital, where she completely lost her vision despite undergoing two surgeries.

INVESTIGATION INITIATED

The Kütahya Chief Public Prosecutor's Office initiated an investigation into the incident upon a complaint from S.Ç.'s family. In this context, statements were taken from the staff at the private care center for the disabled. The Kütahya Governorship also launched an administrative investigation regarding the incident.

"SHE GOT ON TOP AND GOUGED HER EYES FOR 29 SECONDS"

S.Ç.'s nephew, Hüseyin Girgin (23), stated that his aunt had been staying at the private care center for the disabled for two years. He noted that they learned about the incident through a phone call from the center. "Since she is her guardian, my aunt received a call. They said that our patient was having trouble with one eye and that they were taking her to the hospital. My aunt called me. My mother was the first to arrive. When my mother saw my aunt, she realized that both of her eyes had been gouged out. We are still in shock from the incident. Later, we learned that a schizophrenia woman was sitting in the garden with my aunt, and the caregivers were taking them back to their rooms. They put the patient who committed the act in a room with my aunt. The caregiver went to the washing machine to throw in the laundry. Taking advantage of the opportunity, she entered my aunt's room, got on top of her, and gouged her eyes out in 29 seconds. There were scratch marks on her face when she took her eyes out," he said.

"THEY DIDN'T EVEN SAY GET WELL SOON"

Girgin stated that they wanted to watch the camera recordings, but the authorities did not allow it, and he also noted that they did not receive any support or apology from the management of the care center. Girgin said, "There is still no one to talk to us after the incident. We said, 'Let's seek refuge in our state, let's file a complaint with the prosecutor's office.' When we went to the prosecutor's office, the patient who committed this act, along with the institution's directors, assistants, and staff, were all giving statements. We said, 'We are relatives of the patient, we are victims, we couldn't find anyone to talk to, we sought refuge in our state.' My aunt's guardian and my aunt entered the room. We filed our complaint. However, the actions of the institution's directors and assistants are so inhumane that they didn't even come to us to say 'Get well soon, may God grant healing, sorry for the inconvenience.' They are laughing and joking in front of us. Our request from our state is to expand the investigation and to arrest the guilty individuals," he expressed.

"WE ARE THE THIRD CASE"

Continuing his statements, Girgin said, "Right now, nothing will bring my aunt's two eyes back, but it would at least cool our hearts a little. It may help future individuals. Because this is not the first case of this person. We are the third case. We are not completely sure with what we have heard from here and there, but it is said that she gouged out a friend's eye at a center she stayed in Adana," he said.

Hüseyin Girgin also added that his aunt S.Ç. underwent two surgeries on her eyes and brain and completely lost her vision.

NOT THE FIRST INCIDENT

It was noted that N.K., who is undergoing treatment for schizophrenia, killed her grandmother 10 years ago by hitting her on the head with an axe, and in 2020, S.G., who was being treated at Adana Dr. Ekrem Tok Mental Health Hospital, gouged out both eyes of another patient with her fingers, while another female patient at Manisa Mental Health and Diseases Hospital also attempted to gouge out her eyes with a toothbrush.
