60 KILOGRAMS OF RAINFALL IN 20 MINUTES
The weather event, defined by experts as a "supercell," caused widespread damage across Gaziantep. With 60 kilograms of rainfall per square meter in just 20 minutes, this event was recorded as one of the severest disasters in recent years.
Streets and avenues turned into lakes, and a flood risk emerged at Alleben Creek. In many parts of the city, trees were uprooted, electricity poles toppled, and moments when roofs flew off were captured on mobile phone cameras.
TORNADO FORMED, 23 PEOPLE INJURED
It was reported that a tornado formed during the storm, and many vehicles were damaged due to floods and inundations. Twenty-three people were injured in the disaster.
SCHOOLS CLOSED
The Gaziantep Governorship announced that education in all educational institutions in the affected districts of Şehitkamil, Şahinbey, and Nizip would be suspended for one day on Monday, May 4, 2026. It was stated that the decision was made to inspect damaged schools and ensure the safety of citizens.

AFAD, police, gendarmerie, and municipal teams continue damage assessment and intervention efforts across the city, while citizens have been urged to be cautious.
