As part of the corruption and terrorism operation conducted against the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, İBB President Ekrem İmamoğlu was taken into custody. Following İmamoğlu's detention, metro stations leading to Taksim in Istanbul were closed.

After the detention of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, the Istanbul Governorship announced that it has banned meetings and demonstrations between March 19-23 to maintain public order. Following this development, metro stations leading to Taksim in Istanbul were closed.
In a statement made by Metro Istanbul regarding the issue, the following was stated;
In accordance with the decision taken by the Istanbul Governorship, until a second announcement today;
- Our M1 Yenikapı-Atatürk Airport/Kirazlı Metro Line's Emniyet-Fatih station and
- Our M2 Yenikapı-Hacıosman Metro Line's Taksim station and
- Our F1 Taksim-Kabataş Funicular Line have been closed for operation.
Our vehicles will continue their service without stopping at Taksim and Emniyet-Fatih stations.

Meanwhile, some streets and avenues have also been closed to traffic as part of the ban.
