THE SHAKING WAS FELT IN SURROUNDING PROVINCES
According to data from the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), an earthquake of 5.2 magnitude occurred at 08:52 in the Tuşba district of Van. The tremor, which occurred at a depth of 7 kilometers, was also felt in surrounding provinces, especially in Bitlis and Ağrı.
While the earthquake caused panic, teams continued field surveys in the area. AFAD announced in its initial statement that no loss of life or property had been detected.

In a statement following the earthquake, Earthquake Expert Prof. Dr. Naci Görür drew attention to the area where the tremor occurred. Görür stated that the earthquake occurred between the Van-Yeşilköşk fault zones and used the following expressions:
“Today, there was a 5.1 earthquake in Van, between the Van-Yeşilköşk fault zones. This zone is a thrust zone. It is a place where earthquakes have occurred before. It can produce a 7 magnitude earthquake, but we do not expect a new earthquake of this magnitude.”
