After the regime change led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and opposition groups against the regime, the Russian navy began to withdraw from Syria. New satellite images from the Tartus Naval Base on the Mediterranean coast revealed the process of the Russian Navy's withdrawal from Syria. The images showed that warships had left Moscow's only overseas naval base and were anchored off the coast of Syria. According to photos from satellite provider Maxar, three Russian Navy guided missile frigates and at least two support vessels were in Tartus port on December 5. On Tuesday, the ships were seen leaving the port. ISRAEL ATTACK DOCUMENTEDPhotos from Maxar also showed an Israeli attack on Syrian missile boats at the naval base in Latakia, about 50 miles north of Tartus. According to a report on NTV, the Israel Defense Forces confirmed that the military attacked the remnants of the Syrian fleet at the port on Tuesday. Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that the attack was carried out by the Israeli Navy. WHY IS TARTUS NAVAL BASE IMPORTANT?Tartus has long been an important base for Russia in the Mediterranean and a logistics center for naval forces. The base, built by the Soviets in the early 1970s, was rarely used until Russia invaded Crimea in 2012 after the Cold War. Tartus hosted ships used for Russian operations during the early days of the Ukraine invasion. The Russian airbase in Tartus and Latakia has become important centers to support Russian operations in Africa.
