In Diyarbakır, Abdulvahap Aslan (53), who was tried for allegedly killing his wife Dilan Aslan (37) with a pistol, was sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment. The court also sentenced the defendant to 2 years in prison for carrying an unlicensed weapon. At the courthouse exit, Dilan's mother Şadiye D.'s cry of 'Long live justice' was heartbreaking.
In a tragic incident that occurred in the Mevlana Halit neighborhood of Bağlar district in Diyarbakır, on the night of March 31, 2025, teams responding to a suicide call determined that Dilan Aslan, a mother of four, had died from a gunshot wound.
"SAID SHE COMMITTED SUICIDE"
During the investigation, teams found a pistol and an empty casing next to Aslan. It was reported that Dilan Aslan's husband, Abdulvahap Aslan, called his cousin M.A. after the incident, saying, "My wife shot herself in the head, hurry," and M.A. called his brother, who lived nearby, asking him to go to the house.
Abdulvahap Aslan, who left the house after dropping off his 5-year-old child, surrendered at the police station about 2 hours after the incident. Aslan was arrested and sent to prison after the procedures. The indictment prepared by the Diyarbakır Chief Public Prosecutor's Office against Abdulvahap Aslan was accepted, and a lawsuit was filed.
VERDICT HEARING HELD
The verdict hearing of the case was held at the Diyarbakır 1st Heavy Penal Court. The hearing was attended by the defendant Abdulvahap Aslan and his lawyer, Dilan Aslan's children, her mother Şadiye D., family lawyer Selahattin Çoban, and a lawyer from the Provincial Directorate of Family and Social Services. At the hearing, the public prosecutor reiterated their previous opinion and requested an aggravated life sentence for the defendant on the charge of 'Premeditated murder of a spouse who is a woman' and additional punishment for 'Violation of Law No. 6136.'
FLED FROM ISTANBUL TO DIYARBAKIR DUE TO VIOLENCE
In the hearing, family lawyer Selahattin Çoban stated in his defense that they agreed with the opinion but that the murder was premeditated and requested an aggravated life sentence for the defendant. Çoban, noting that the absence of fingerprints on the weapon indicated the incident was planned days in advance, said, "The victim took refuge in Diyarbakır because she was subjected to violence in Istanbul. Although her brother's house was only 5 minutes away, they went home an hour later. We believe the evidence was tampered with."
The lawyer from the Provincial Directorate of Family and Social Services stated, "All evidence collected in the file indicates that the act was premeditated. Therefore, we request that the defendant be punished for 'Premeditated murder of a spouse.'"
DENIED THE ALLEGATIONS
The defendant Abdulvahap Aslan began his defense by claiming he did not commit the murder. Defendant Aslan said, "I came to Diyarbakır after my wife. My wife had been in Diyarbakır for 5 months. I never even slapped my wife. I am sorry. But I did not commit the murder. I am innocent and request my acquittal."
DEFENDANT'S LAWYER TARGETED WITNESSES
Defendant's lawyer Servet Dinler said, "There are witnesses whose statements were taken with a hostile attitude. These are not eyewitnesses. These witness statements cannot be evaluated objectively. They are slander. My client is clearly being slandered. The police found no signs of struggle or fight at the scene. Even the child was handed over to his uncle because he was asleep. It is very clear that there was no physical struggle. It is impossible to claim that my client wore gloves before committing the murder and then committed it. This contradicts the normal course of life. This slander comes from my client's own child. All assessments made against my client in the file were made with a sense of hostility. The sentence 'I will kill you' is not in the audio recordings. I request my client's release."
HEART-WRENCHING CRY FROM DILAN'S MOTHER
After the break, the court panel announced its verdict. The court panel sentenced the defendant Abdulvahap Aslan to an aggravated life sentence without reduction for the crime of 'Premeditated murder of a spouse and a woman' and 2 years in prison for 'Violation of Law No. 6136.' After the hearing, Dilan's mother, Şadiye D., shouted, 'Long live justice.'
