Geophysical Engineer Prof. Dr. Övgün Ahmet Ercan stated, "The effects of the M6.2 earthquake have ended. The movement towards the east, towards Istanbul, has stopped. There are at least 20 to 50 years until the big earthquake."

After the earthquakes on February 6, while Turkey continues to shake like a cradle, the last earthquake of 6.2 that occurred in Istanbul caused great panic among the citizens.

"THE EARTHQUAKE HAS STOPPED MOVING TOWARDS THE EAST, TO ISTANBUL"

The statement that somewhat relieved millions came from Geophysicist Prof. Dr. Övgün Ahmet Ercan. Ercan stated on his X account, "The effect of the M6.2 earthquake has ended. The movement towards the east, to Istanbul, has stopped. There is at least 20 to 50 years until the big earthquake."

THE EXPECTED LARGEST EARTHQUAKE IN ISTANBUL IS 6.7

Prof. Dr. Ercan, who said he would monitor the effects of the earthquake until morning, stated, "The recent M6.2 earthquake showed that the northern Marmara is not made up of a single fracture. Therefore, it has been understood that earthquake magnitudes of M7.5-M8.0 contain scientific inconsistencies. The current point is that there will be a two-fault rupture, namely the Thrace and Istanbul branches, which I have emphasized since 1999. The expected largest earthquake is M7.0-M7.2. Since the last earthquake shortened the fault length by 28 km, it has dropped to M6.9-M7.1 in the Thrace branch and between M6.4-M6.7 in the Istanbul branch," he said.

"MARMARA IS NOT UNDER STRESS TO PRODUCE A BIG EARTHQUAKE"

Prof. Dr. Ercan also stated that the Marmara region is not under stress to produce a big earthquake, saying, "Will there be big earthquakes in Gemlik, Mudanya, Bandırma, Erdek, and Biga in the Sea of Marmara? According to the deformation maps derived from geophysical measurements using satellite positioning, the Sea of Marmara is not under stress to produce earthquakes both in the north and south," he had stated.
