Professor Dr. Mustafa Sarı, a faculty member of Bandırma Onyedi Eylül University Maritime Faculty, shared a striking video and statement to draw attention to the mucilage problem occurring in the Sea of Marmara. In his post on social media, Professor Dr. Sarı reacted to the waste discharges made by the deep discharge method in the Sea of Marmara, pointing to the responsibility of municipalities and their consultants. "MUCILAGE REVEALED OUR BETRAYAL TO MARMARA"Including a footage recorded at a depth of 20 meters in his explanations, Professor Dr. Sarı emphasized that it is a serious mistake to release waste that has undergone preliminary treatment into the bottom current of the Sea of Marmara using the deep discharge method. Professor Dr. Sarı stated, "We are faced with a scene where untreated waste is dumped into the sea. However, the sea has no language to express what has been done! From the outside, nothing is visible, but mucilage has revealed the crimes we have committed against Marmara," he said. "DEEP DISCHARGE IS A FOOLISH DELAY"Professor Dr. Sarı noted that the deep discharge application postpones pollution rather than reducing it, stating that releasing waste into the sea without advanced biological treatment harms the sensitive ecosystem of Marmara. He expressed, "Not even 1 liter of waste can be released into the Sea of Marmara without treatment. Deep discharge should only be used for waste that has undergone advanced biological treatment." "MUCILAGE IS A RESULT, ARISING FROM POLLUTION"Pointing out that mucilage is a result of pollution, Professor Dr. Sarı said, "The only controllable trigger of mucilage is pollution. We cannot protect the Sea of Marmara without stopping pollution," calling on authorities and the public. Professor Dr. Sarı's statements, emphasizing the need for more comprehensive measures to protect the Sea of Marmara, serve as an important warning for raising environmental awareness and ensuring the sustainability of the marine ecosystem.
