The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has initiated an ex officio investigation for the crimes of "making propaganda for a terrorist organization" and "publicly disseminating misleading information" based on the news article titled "Journalists Nazım Daştan and Cihan Bilgin were killed in Syria" published on the T24 news site and the social media post by journalist Seyhan Avşar. The statement from the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office said: "On 20/12/2024, a news article titled 'Journalists Nazım Daştan and Cihan Bilgin were killed in Syria' was published on the news site T24, and on 21/12/2024, a post was made by an individual named Seyhan Avşar on their Twitter social media account. Due to their affiliation with the PKK terrorist organization, there are records regarding the organization members Nazım Daştan and Cihan Bilgin, who were praised with commendatory remarks, and due to the misleading information regarding their deaths as a result of so-called journalistic activities and their journalist identities, our Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has initiated an ex officio investigation for the crimes of Making Propaganda for a Terrorist Organization and Publicly Disseminating Misleading Information.
