A 74-year-old citizen who presented to the hospital with complaints of chest pain and shortness of breath in Batman was found to have an abnormal vessel originating from the right main artery of the heart and extending to the lung. The vessel, which diverted some of the blood that should have gone to the heart to the lung, was closed using an endovascular method. Following the successful operation, which is the first of its kind in the city, all of the citizen's complaints ceased.
Seventy-four-year-old Şükrü Demirtaş, living in Batman, applied to the Cardiology Department of Batman Education and Research Hospital with complaints of chest burning and shortness of breath.
AN ABNORMAL VESSEL 'STEALING' BLOOD FROM HIS HEART WAS FOUND An abnormal vessel originating from the right coronary artery (RCA) and extending to the lung was detected during the angiography. In the evaluation conducted by Cardiology Specialist Dr. Abdulaziz Taş and Interventional Radiology Specialist Dr. Abdurrezzak Teken, it was determined that this vessel was 'stealing' a portion of the blood that should go to the heart and directing it to the lung, causing the patient to experience chest pain and shortness of breath.
THE OPERATION WAS PERFORMED FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THE CITY A decision was made to perform a procedure on the patient diagnosed with the rare coronary steal syndrome. The abnormal vessel that extended from the heart to the lung and redirected blood was successfully closed with an endovascular embolization procedure. After the procedure, a significant improvement was observed in the patient's complaints. It was noted that this application was performed for the first time in Batman.
"I NO LONGER HAVE COMPLAINTS" After the operation, Şükrü Demirtaş stated, "They told me there was an extra vessel that was stealing some of the blood going to my heart. They intervened, and my surgery was successful. I no longer have complaints."
"SUCH CASES ARE RARE AND OCCUR BETWEEN 1 IN 10,000 AND 1 IN 100,000" Dr. Abdurrezzak Teken, one of the doctors who performed the operation, stated, "Our uncle Şükrü applied to the cardiology department two weeks ago. Dr. Aziz evaluated him. Due to his chest pain and shortness of breath, an angiography was planned. Abnormal findings were observed during the angiography. Dr. Aziz called me. We evaluated the angiography together. We detected an abnormal third vessel originating from the right system in our uncle Şükrü. This vessel extended towards the lung and was stealing a portion of the blood going to the heart. Dr. Aziz and I performed the procedure. We successfully blocked the abnormal vessel. The procedure was successful. His complaints were chest pain and shortness of breath. All of the uncle's complaints have passed. This also shows us how important the collaboration between interventional radiology and cardiology is. Such cases are rare and occur between 1 in 10,000 and 1 in 100,000. Thanks to the interventional radiology department we opened in Batman, we can now perform such rare cases here. We have reduced referrals. For such procedures, our patients can now receive treatment in Batman without going out of the city," he said.
