A new era is beginning in mandatory traffic insurance, affecting both premium amounts and drivers' tiers. With the latest announced updated tariff, policy amounts have been redefined, and significant regulations that will come into effect after January 1, 2026, have been announced. In the table, it was noted that the lowest premium has increased to 15,000 TL, while the insurance costs for some vehicle groups have exceeded 290,000 TL. Here are all the details you need to know...
The updated premium tariffs for the mandatory traffic insurance that all motor vehicle owners in Turkey are required to obtain have been published by the Insurance Information Center. Thus, the figures that closely concern both individual vehicle owners and commercial enterprises have become clear.
FOR DRIVERS IN THE 4TH STAGE IN ISTANBUL, THE LOWER LIMIT EXCEEDS 15,000 TL
According to the announced data, a driver in Istanbul who will insure their car in the 4th stage cannot go on the road without obtaining a policy. The mandatory traffic insurance premium for this stage in the city has been set at 15,060 TL. It was reminded that those who hit the road without insurance will face both administrative fines and have their vehicles banned from traffic if caught.
AN AVERAGE OF 1% INCREASE IN PREMIUMS
The new table shows that there has been an average increase of 1% in traffic insurance premiums.
- The premium for the most risky driver in the zero stage in Istanbul is 45,181 TL,
- While the premium for the least risky driver in the 8th stage in the same city is announced as 7,530 TL.
It was reported that the price difference between these two stages is approximately 500%.
Similarly:
- In Ankara, the premium for the most risky driver is 43,902 TL, and the premium for the least risky driver is 7,317 TL,
- In Izmir, the premiums for the same classes are recorded as 42,623 TL and 7,104 TL, respectively.
PREMIUMS FOR COMMERCIAL TAXIS CAUGHT ATTENTION
The mandatory traffic insurance premiums for taxi operators have been announced at higher levels compared to the previous period.
- In Istanbul, the zero stage premium for commercial taxis is 121,397 TL,
- While the premium for the eighth stage is 20,233 TL.
In Ankara, these figures are set at 117,961 TL – 19,660 TL, while in Izmir, they are determined to be in the range of 114,526 TL – 19,088 TL.
BUSES AT THE PEAK: PREMIUMS EXCEEDING 290,000 TL
Especially for large vehicles engaged in passenger transportation, the tariffs are higher. In Istanbul, the premium amount for buses with 31 seats or more in the zero stage has risen to 290,969 TL, while the amount set for the eighth stage is 48,495 TL.
THE STAGE RULE IN TRAFFIC INSURANCE HAS CHANGED
Another important headline announced by the Insurance Information Center is the regulation made in the stage application. Previously, anyone who purchased a new vehicle had to obtain their policy from the 4th stage, regardless of their previous performance. This situation was a disadvantage for drivers who did not have accidents.
With the new regulation:
- The driver will insure their new vehicle from the same stage they are in. For example; if a driver in the 8th stage who has not had any accidents buys a new car, their policy will now start from the 8th stage.
- Similarly, high-risk drivers in the 1st stage will not be raised to the 4th stage when purchasing a new vehicle; their policies will still be arranged from the 1st stage.
For those who sell their current vehicle and buy a new one, the application has not changed; drivers will continue from the stage they are in.
NEW RULE FOR EARLY POLICY RENEWERS
The regulation also includes an important change for drivers who renew early. In the previous system, the stage of those who had an accident before their new policy came into effect remained fixed. However, with the new circular, if an accident occurs after early renewal, the driver's no-claims stage will be reduced by one level.
TO COME INTO EFFECT ON JANUARY 1, 2026
The purpose of the insurance regulation is stated to protect the no-claims driver and withdraw the advantages provided to risky drivers. It has been announced that all new rules will start to be implemented as of January 1, 2026.
