A peaceful prayer service in Spokane, Washington, turned into chaos due to an unexpected attack. Father David Gaines, who serves at Our Lady of Lourdes Cathedral, was attacked by a "disturbed individual" while praying with Bishop Thomas Daly.

In footage broadcasted live from the church, the attacker suddenly stood up from the front row and ran towards the altar. Father Gaines intervened to subdue the attacker, resulting in a brief struggle between the two. Church officials and congregation members immediately rushed to the priest's aid.

During the attack, the officiating priest, Darrin Connall, called for security personnel. After the attacker was handcuffed and removed from the church, Connall continued the service and prayed for the "disturbed gentleman."

No one was injured during the attack. Speaking at the service held the next day, Father Connall jokingly suggested to Father Gaines, "I recommended he wear a bandage like President Trump did after the assassination attempt in July 2024, but Gaines has a greater sense of integrity."

The attacker, whose identity has not been disclosed, was arrested for assault and trespassing. The motive for the attack is still unknown as the suspect is expected to be brought to court.

The attack occurred on the second night of the church's nine-day special prayer program called "Novena for Healing at Lourdes." This program concludes with healing, peace, and the patron saint of the sick, Our Lady of Lourdes.

The church administration stated on social media, "Father Gaines and Bishop Daly are doing well. Thank you for your concern."
