The Banks Association of Turkey (TBB) announced that consumers should pay attention to all warnings and information provided by official institutions and service providers regarding fraud cases. Recently, there has been an increase in fraud cases occurring through internet and mobile channels.
TBB published information about common fraud methods encountered in digital channels and ways to protect against these methods. The statement listed the types of fraud that are frequently encountered.
FRAUD TYPES
These include fraud conducted through fake websites and insecure shopping platforms, the manipulation of personal information to gain access, fraud conducted through fake accounts on social media platforms, messages from fake email addresses to obtain personal information, theft of personal information through fake SMS and emails, attempts to steal information and money by providing remote access to devices, and data theft by loading malware onto computers or mobile devices.
DO NOT CLICK ON LINKS
The information emphasized that links in notifications received via SMS, email, or social media should not be clicked without verifying their source.
USE OFFICIAL CHANNELS
It was pointed out that verification should be done using the official communication channels of the service provider, and that a single click could redirect a person to fake sites or viruses.
DO NOT INSTALL MOBILE APPLICATIONS YOU ARE NOT SURE ABOUT
The information stressed that users should not allow anyone to use their bank accounts, stating, "Do not share your passwords with anyone. Do not trust individuals who claim to be prosecutors, police, soldiers, bank employees, or lawyers, or who ask for your password, card information, and personal data for a reward, refund, or card fee refund; do not click on links sent for this purpose. Do not install mobile applications on your devices that you are not sure about their security. Applications with security vulnerabilities or pirated applications can steal your personal information, damage your device, and even lead to identity theft."
DOWNLOAD BANKING APPLICATIONS FROM OFFICIAL ACCOUNTS
The statements indicated, "Download your banking applications from official app stores. Do not download applications from unknown or untrusted sources."
FOLLOW SECURITY ANNOUNCEMENTS
The statement warned that banks' security announcements should be followed, and it was emphasized that the warnings conveyed in these announcements should also be taken into account to keep personal information up to date.
DO NOT USE YOUR PASSWORDS ON OTHER SITES
The statement expressed the importance of carefully checking the permissions requested by applications installed on personal mobile phones, computers, and tablets, and provided the following warnings:
Do not use the passwords you use in banking applications on other applications and shopping sites. Your passwords can be compromised on less secure sites, and these passwords can be tried to access your banking applications.
DO NOT SHOP ON UNTRUSTED SITES
Do not shop from internet sites that you are not sure about their security. You may be defrauded through a fake site created for fraudulent purposes.
CHECK YOUR BANK ACCOUNT STATEMENT
Regularly check your bank account statements and transactions, and in case of any suspicious situation, contact your bank without wasting time.
