DISCUSSIONS ON SYRIA-TURKEY RELATIONSSyrian President Bashar al-Assad met with Alexander Lavrentiev, the Special Envoy of Russian President Vladimir Putin, in the capital city of Damascus. According to the statement from the Presidency, discussions were held on Syria-Turkey relations. "RESPECT FOR SYRIA'S SOVEREIGNTY IS NECESSARY"Assad emphasized that the foundation of any effort to improve Syria-Turkey relations is "respect for Syria's sovereignty." Assad stated, "We are open to any initiative regarding Syria-Turkey relations as long as respect is shown for Syria's sovereignty over all its territories and it is based on the fight against all forms of terrorism." RUSSIA READY TO ADVANCE NEGOTIATIONSLavrentiev reiterated that Russia supports all initiatives aimed at normalizing relations between Syria and Turkey. Lavrentiev highlighted that the conditions currently seem more favorable than ever for the success of mediations and emphasized that Russia is ready to work towards advancing negotiations. Lavrentiev stated, "The main goal is to normalize relations between the two countries." Turkey and Syria severed diplomatic relations in 2012 following the start of the civil war.
