The new Traffic Law proposal, which aims to increase penalties for traffic rule violations, will be discussed in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey in the first days of the new year. Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya, while answering journalists' questions at the TBMM during the discussions on the 2026 Central Government Budget and the 2024 Final Account Law Proposal, announced that the regulation will come to the agenda of the Assembly in the "first week of January."

LICENSE CANCELLATION FOR THOSE WHO GET OUT OF THEIR VEHICLES DURING DISCUSSIONS

The proposal aims to increase deterrence against violations that endanger life and property safety in traffic. Accordingly, heavy penalties, including license cancellation, are being introduced for drivers who get out of their vehicles with the intent to attack during traffic disputes or who persistently follow another vehicle.

LICENSES WILL BE CANCELED FOR 6 RED LIGHT VIOLATIONS

One of the most notable provisions of the regulation concerns red light violations. According to the proposal, drivers who are found to have violated red lights 6 times within a calendar year will have their licenses canceled. Additionally, these drivers will face an administrative fine of 80,000 lira. Drivers who cause traffic accidents as a result of red light violations will have their licenses revoked for 60 days. The return of documents will be conditional on passing a psychotechnical evaluation and having no obstacles to driving.

15,000 LIRA FINE FOR DRIVERS WHO DO NOT YIELD

Penalties for speeding violations are also being tightened. Drivers who exceed the speed limit by 46–55 kilometers within residential areas will have their licenses revoked for 30 days, those exceeding by 56–65 kilometers for 60 days, and those exceeding by 66 kilometers or more for 90 days. Drivers who do not yield to vehicles with the right of way will face an administrative fine of 15,000 lira. For drivers who do not yield or stop for ambulances, vehicles carrying injured or emergency patients, and vehicles fighting forest fires, a fine of 46,000 lira will be imposed, and their licenses will be confiscated for 30 days.

5,000 LIRA FINE FOR CELL PHONE USE

If modifications made to vehicles cause noise at a level that disturbs the environment, drivers will be fined 16,000 lira. Drivers who follow another vehicle with the intent to attack or get out of their vehicles will face a fine of 180,000 lira, their licenses will be revoked for 60 days, and their vehicles will be banned from traffic for 30 days. Drivers using cell phones while driving will face a fine of 5,000 lira. Drivers participating in races will be fined 46,000 lira, and their licenses will be revoked for 2 years.

PRISON SENTENCE FOR HIT-AND-RUN DRIVERS

One of the heaviest penalties included in the proposal is for drivers who flee the scene of an accident. In fatal or injury-causing traffic accidents, drivers who leave the scene without a mandatory reason and without the permission of the authorities are expected to face a prison sentence of 1 to 3 years.
