U.S. President Joe Biden issued a "preemptive pardon" for some individuals that 47th President Donald Trump might target just hours before officially handing over the office.
With the oath ceremony that will take place hours later in the USA, President Joe Biden, who will officially hand over the duty to the elected president Donald Trump, has issued a 'preemptive pardon' for some names that Trump has 'targeted for retaliation.'
MILLEY AND FAUCI ARE INCLUDED
According to Reuters, among the names for which President Joe Biden has issued a pardon are; former Chief of Staff Mark Milley, former Republican representative Liz Cheney, and former White House Chief Medical Advisor Anthony Fauci.
COVERS THOSE SERVING ON THE COMMITTEE INVESTIGATING THE CONGRESSIONAL RAID
The pardon covers all individuals who served on the Congressional committee established to investigate the raid on Congress by Trump supporters on January 6, 2021. Police officers who were called to testify before the committee are also included in the pardon.
BIDEN: THESE INDIVIDUALS DO NOT DESERVE TO BE TARGETS OF UNJUST PROSECUTIONS
Biden stated in his announcement regarding the pardon, "These public servants have served our nation with honor and distinction; these individuals do not deserve to be targets of unjust and politically motivated prosecutions." Following Biden's pardon decision, Milley expressed that he was 'deeply grateful' for this decision.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Today, at around 20:00 Turkish time, Donald Trump, who will officially take over the duty from Joe Biden by taking an oath, had called for the prosecution of those he perceives as 'enemies' after winning the presidential election. Biden, who described public servants as 'the lifeblood of our democracy,' expressed his concerns that some of these officials might face threats and intimidation for doing their jobs, without directly mentioning Trump.
Cheney became a target for Trump due to her leadership in the investigation in Congress, while Fauci had clashed with Trump during the coronavirus pandemic. Milley had stated in Bob Woodward's book 'Fear' that Trump was 'essentially a fascist.'
