The Germany-based luxury car manufacturer BMW will recall hundreds of thousands of vehicles worldwide due to a technical fault in the ignition system that could cause a fire.

The Munich-based luxury car manufacturer BMW announced that it will recall approximately 575,000 vehicles produced between July 2020 and July 2022 due to a technical fault in the starter system.

MORE THAN 500,000 VEHICLES WILL BE RECALLED

BMW announced that it will conduct a large-scale recall of vehicles produced between July 2020 and July 2022 due to a technical fault in the starter system that could cause a fire. In this context, approximately 28,582 vehicles will be recalled in Germany. BMW did not provide information on how many vehicles will be recalled globally or the costs associated with the recall.

However, the German press reported that the total number of vehicles to be recalled is approximately 575,000.

FIRE RISK EXISTS

In a statement regarding the issue, BMW reported that excessive wear could occur in the starter motor solenoid after high usage. The statement emphasized that this defect could make it difficult, or even impossible, for the vehicle to operate, and furthermore, there is a risk of a short circuit that could cause localized overheating in the starter motor.

The company stated, "In the worst-case scenario, this situation could lead to a fire while the vehicle is in motion. Smoke may be visible or its smell may be detected during driving or when exiting the vehicle."

The statement advised vehicle owners not to leave the vehicle unattended while the engine is running to prevent any potential risks.

AFFECTING MANY MODELS

The recall operation covers various variants of the 2 Series Coupe, 3, 4, 5, and 7 Series Sedans, as well as the 6 Series Gran Turismo, X4, X5, X6, and Z4 models. It was reported that vehicles equipped with the starter relay produced between July 2020 and July 2022 are at risk, and vehicles that had faulty starter motors installed during repairs are also included in the recall.

The German manufacturer had previously conducted a large-scale recall in September 2025 for vehicles produced between September 2015 and September 2021 due to a fault in the starter system that could cause a fire.

While the reason for the previous recall was water leakage that caused corrosion, this time the issue is noted to stem directly from physical wear on the part. In the previous recall, the fire risk was present even when the engine was off, whereas in the current defect, the risk is more likely to arise when the engine is running.
