Following the end of Viktor Orban's 16-year rule in Hungary, the newly appointed Peter Magyar conveyed his first messages on foreign policy through the United States and Russia. Emphasizing that he does not intend to establish direct contact with major powers, Magyar highlighted the condition that 'the other side must take the first step' regarding communication with both Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, while also making notable assessments regarding the Russia-Ukraine war.
Peter Magyar, who ended Viktor Orban's 16-year rule in Hungary, directed his first messages towards the USA and Russia after taking office. Magyar signaled that he would pursue a cautious and distant approach in foreign policy.
“I WILL NOT CALL TRUMP, NOR PUTIN”
In his statement, Magyar stated that he does not intend to establish direct contact with either US President Donald Trump or Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Saying “I will not call Trump. I will not call Putin either,” Magyar expressed that they would be open to it if communication comes from the other side.
“IF PUTIN CALLS, I WILL ANSWER THE PHONE”
Magyar, who did not completely close the door to possible dialogue with Russia, said, “If Vladimir Putin calls me, I will answer the phone. I don't think that will happen.”
Emphasizing that he would not call Putin himself, Magyar stated that in a possible meeting, he could address the Russia-Ukraine war.
“I WOULD TELL HIM TO END THE WAR”
In his assessment of Russia's war against Ukraine, Magyar used the following expressions: “If we talk, after four years, I could tell him to please stop killing and end that senseless war. This situation is also illogical from their perspective; because tens of thousands of Russians have lost their lives.”
“WE ARE OPEN TO CONTACT WITH THE USA”
Adopting a similar stance regarding relations with the USA, Magyar said, “I will not call Trump. But if he or anyone from the US administration reaches out to us, we will be ready.”
