The minimum wage for 2025 has been determined, but discussions on the topic continue. Kocaeli University Faculty Member Prof. Dr. Ferhat Pehlivanoğlu was the guest of presenter Abdurrahman Yazıcı on Haberler.com. In response to presenter Yazıcı's question, "Can we switch to the American model for minimum wage?" Prof. Dr. Pehlivanoğlu stated that this system could be implemented in Turkey. He emphasized that some legal regulations would be necessary and continued his statements as follows: Hourly wage has become a preferred method, especially in countries where flexible and temporary work models are common. In countries like the USA, Canada, and Germany, hourly wages provide a practical approach, especially for part-time workers. I think transitioning to this system in Turkey is theoretically possible, but we would face practical issues. We need to address those. Legislative changes and updates to existing laws regarding working hours and wage calculations will be necessary. When transitioning to hourly wage, complexities may arise regarding overtime, holidays, and similar factors. Employers may exert pressure to increase the productivity of employees working under the hourly wage system. This could undermine workers' rights. Informal employment may increase, and it needs to be monitored. The advantage is that it provides flexibility to employees. It can create more suitable working conditions, especially for students, women, and temporary workers.
