Before the hearing of the lawsuit filed by Ekrem İmamoğlu against the cancellation of his bachelor's degree, tension arose between those trying to breach the security barrier in Silivri and the gendarmerie teams. In moments of heightened tension, CHP Member of Parliament Suat Özçağdaş committed a major scandal by insulting a gendarmerie personnel, calling him "dishonorable." While an investigation was launched regarding the acts of resistance and insult against the gendarmerie, there was also a reaction from Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya.
The trial of Ekrem İmamoğlu, who was arrested in the 'corruption' investigation against the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) and removed from the position of IMM President, was held in Silivri regarding the lawsuit he filed against the cancellation of his diploma.
INSULT TO THE GENDARMERIE BY CHP DEPUTY Before the trial, tension arose between those trying to breach the security barrier and the gendarmerie teams. During this time, CHP Istanbul Deputy Suat Özçağdaş made a major scandal. Özçağdaş pushed a staff member while saying, "Let me go, son," and insulted the gendarmerie in the vehicle by saying, "You dishonorable." It was also seen that a person next to Özçağdaş shouted at the gendarmerie personnel, "You didn't come from Israel, you came from Israel." Those moments were captured on camera.
INVESTIGATION INITIATED The scandalous images prompted the Bakırköy Chief Public Prosecutor's Office to take action and initiate an investigation. In a statement from the prosecutor's office, it was said, "An investigation has been initiated ex officio by our Chief Public Prosecutor's Office regarding the acts of resistance and insult against the gendarmerie personnel carried out on 15.01.2026 at the Marmara Penal Institutions Campus."
CHP Istanbul Deputy Suat Özçağdaş MINISTER YERLİKAYA'S REACTION: DO YOU THINK THE GENDARMERIE IS WITHOUT A SUPPORTER? On the other hand, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya reacted to the scandal involving CHP members. In a post on his social media account regarding the issue, Yerlikaya referred to Özçağdaş and those with him, saying, "Do you think our gendarmerie, who selflessly serves day and night for our homeland, is without a supporter?"
Yerlikaya included the following statements in his post: "The CHP deputy who insulted our gendarmerie and the person next to him... Do you think our gendarmerie, who selflessly serves day and night for our homeland, is without a supporter? Do you think those sons of the homeland, who have the prayers of our nation behind them, are alone? With what audacity do you insult the honor of our gendarmerie wearing that noble uniform? With what audacity do you compare them to Israeli soldiers? You will certainly pay the price for the insults you have made, both in the conscience of our nation and before the law. No matter how much you hide it, the evil within you is surfacing. Because a person's tongue is the interpreter of what is in their heart."
