In a collapse at an abandoned gold mine in western Mali, initial reports indicate that 48 people, mostly women, lost their lives. It has been learned that the collapse occurred while a group of women was climbing into the mine site, which had been left open for gold searching.

According to local news reports, a collapse occurred yesterday near the town of Kenieba in the Kayes region at an abandoned mining site previously operated by a Chinese company. Initial reports indicate that 48 people, mostly women, lost their lives in the incident.

THEY EXPERIENCED DISASTER WHILE CLIMBING THE MINING SITE

It was noted that the collapse occurred while a group of women was climbing the mining site, which had been left open for the purpose of searching for gold.

10 PEOPLE HAD DIED IN JANUARY AS WELL

It was reported that search and rescue operations are ongoing. In January, at least 10 people had lost their lives in a landslide at an illegal gold mine in the south of the country.
