Hamas, due to his remarks regarding relations with the U.S. and the headscarf ban, has become a target for conservatives, leading Iranian President Zarif to resign. President Pezeshkian has not yet responded to the letter.
According to the official Iranian news agency IRNA, the Vice President for Strategic Affairs, Zarif, submitted his resignation letter to President Mesoud Pezeshkian. It was noted that Pezeshkian has not yet responded to Zarif's resignation letter.
It is noteworthy that Vice President Zarif's resignation came after the dismissal of Minister of Economy Abdunnasir Hemmati by the Parliament. Hemmati, who was accused of being ineffective against the economic problems, was dismissed by the Parliament yesterday.
ARCHITECT OF THE NUCLEAR AGREEMENT
Zarif, who served as Foreign Minister from 2013 to 2021 during the presidency of former President Hasan Rouhani, was one of the architects of the nuclear agreement signed in 2015. In August, Zarif was appointed by President Pezeshkian as Vice President for Strategic Affairs.
Zarif, who has been targeted by ultra-conservative groups, had hinted at his resignation in August when the government received a vote of confidence in Parliament, but later continued in his position.
SPARKED REACTIONS FROM CONSERVATIVES
Most recently, Zarif drew the ire of ultra-conservative groups in the country due to his statements regarding the hijab ban and Hamas's attacks on October 7, 2023, made at the World Economic Forum (WEF) held in Davos, Switzerland, in January. Protests against Zarif were organized by some groups in Tehran and Mashhad.
