The Catalonia High Court of Justice overturned the sexual assault conviction of Brazilian footballer Dani Alves, acquitting the famous figure. The 4-year and 6-month prison sentence previously handed down by the Barcelona Court was deemed invalid as a result of the appeal.
INSUFFICIENT EVIDENCE FOUND
The court panel stated that the testimony of the young woman who accused Alves was not sufficient to render a verdict. The panel emphasized that the other evidence in the case did not support the testimony, and therefore the presumption of innocence should prevail.
Alves was tried in 2023 regarding an incident that occurred at a nightclub in Barcelona and was sentenced to 4 years and 6 months in prison for sexual assault. However, following the appeal by his lawyers, the Supreme Court re-evaluated the case.
According to the court's decision, Dani Alves' conviction has been annulled. However, the parties have the right to appeal to the Constitutional Court or the European Court of Human Rights.
