A historic moment took place in the courtroom during the final hearing of the case of Batuhan Kurt, who was killed in a knife attack while going to work on March 19, 2022, in Ümraniye, Istanbul. The father of Kurt's ex-girlfriend, who killed him, was sentenced to life imprisonment. With the announcement of the verdict, Kurt's mother, overwhelmed with tears of joy, unveiled the Turkish flag she had kept for years, which she had wrapped around her son's coffin. Mother Kurt said, "I unveiled my son's flag today for justice. I feel a little relieved."
21-year-old Batuhan Kurt, who lived in Istanbul, was working at a jewelry store in the Grand Bazaar. On March 19, 2022, when he left home in the morning to go to work, he was attacked with a knife and lost his life.
HE WAS RELEASED AT THE 2ND HEARING
Following Kurt's death, an investigation was launched, and one person was apprehended. The arrested individual was Hasan Göksu, the father of Kurt's ex-girlfriend. According to allegations, Göksu had threatened Kurt with death over the phone. The trial regarding the murder began, but at the 2nd hearing, it was decided to release Göksu.
"THERE IS A 17.36% SIMILARITY"
In the last hearing, the court panel decided to prepare an expert report to determine whether a person who got into a taxi near the crime scene belonged to Hasan Göksu. That report came from TÜBİTAK. In the report, the photos of the person in the taxi were compared with the images of Hasan Göksu through AI-based algorithms. In the image analysis of the person whose face was covered with a mask and hat, the similarity rate to Hasan Göksu was determined to be 17.36%.
The report stated that the AI-based algorithms used during the comparison could often detect the similarity of photos belonging to different individuals as close to 0. Therefore, the court found the 17.36% similarity result sufficient. It was decided to issue an arrest warrant for the detention of Hasan Göksu. Hasan Göksu was apprehended by police teams in Sinop on August 6. Göksu, who was brought to the courthouse, was arrested.
