MHP leader Devlet Bahçeli harshly criticized Prof. Dr. Celal Şengör, who said after the Istanbul earthquake, "Istanbul is on the brink, time is running out. The most reasonable step now is to leave the city." Bahçeli stated, "To those remnants of occupation who want Istanbul to be abandoned, I say this: We will not abandon Istanbul, which we have made our homeland with our blood and lives, nor will we turn our backs on even a single stone of it."

The 6.2 magnitude earthquake that occurred in Silivri, Istanbul on April 23 raised concerns. Geologist Prof. Dr. Celal Şengör, who made statements after the earthquake, said, "It is expected that a 6.2 magnitude earthquake will have aftershocks smaller than itself. However, if there are earthquakes greater than 6.2 afterwards, the possibility that these could be precursors to the expected major earthquake in Istanbul becomes stronger."
"THE MOST LOGICAL STEP IS TO LEAVE THE CITY"
Şengör, who said, "We cannot know whether it is a precursor to the earthquake that will happen in 10 years or the one that will happen in 10 minutes," stated, "Istanbul is at the mouth of the cannon. Due to the precautions that have not been taken for years, time is running out. Now the most logical step is to leave the city."
DEVLET BAHÇELİ RESPONDED HARSHLY TO CELAL ŞENGÖR
While Şengör's statements were discussed for days, MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli also targeted Şengör without naming him.
In a written statement expressing his views on the Istanbul earthquake, Bahçeli said to Şengör, "The contradictory and completely conflicting words and evaluations of scientists working on earthquakes and so-called experts who make mixed statements cannot be accepted."
Bahçeli continued his statements with the following remarks:
"In such a critical matter, acting in unison is a requirement of academic ethics and decorum, yet this has not been done. Even if the optimistic statement by our earthquake expert academician that there is no longer any earthquake danger in Istanbul due to the complete rupture of the fault line in the Kumburgaz basin has calmed hearts, it is essential to take sequential precautions without interruption."
"OCCUPATION REMNANTS"
To the occupation remnants who want Istanbul to be abandoned, I say this: We will not abandon Istanbul, which we made our homeland with our blood and lives, nor will we give up a single stone of it; we will not turn our backs. The result of a poor mind is a haughty tongue. This language is devoid of vigilant intelligence, far from independent conscience, and is a language infected with Turkish and Turkey enmity, and it is extremely dangerous.
The current CHP administration has degraded and transformed to the extent of aspiring to be the spearhead of the cruel forces that have designs on our national unity, national existence, and independence, and that have reached our castle gates. At this stage, to say CHP means a cycle of concession, humiliation, and surrender."
