The World Health Organization (WHO) announced that 48 cases have been reported due to the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), and 31 people have lost their lives.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus shared updated data on the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo during a press conference held in Geneva.

31 OUT OF 48 CASES HAVE DIED

Ghebreyesus stated that DRC officials continue to fight the outbreak, noting that out of the 48 confirmed Ebola cases in the southern part of the country, 31 have resulted in death.

Emphasizing that WHO has sent more than 14 tons of medical supplies to the country, Ghebreyesus reported that 48 experts have been deployed and support has been provided for the operation of an Ebola treatment center with a capacity of 48 beds.

Ghebreyesus indicated that vaccination efforts are ongoing, stating that 16 people are still being treated, 14 have recovered, and two individuals who survived the disease were discharged on September 16.

CALL FOR 21 MILLION DOLLARS TO FIGHT THE OUTBREAK

Referring to the 21 million dollar fundraising campaign they initiated to strengthen DRC's fight against the outbreak, Ghebreyesus said: "We asked donors to support this fight. The investment made now will help save lives and stop the outbreak at its source."

In a statement from WHO's official page, it was noted that the International Vaccine Supply Coordination Group has approved the shipment of approximately 45,000 additional doses to increase vaccine supply.

WHAT HAPPENED?

DRC Health Minister Samuel Roger Kamba declared a new Ebola outbreak on September 4, and WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus confirmed the outbreak.

It was reported that the number of suspected Ebola cases in the Kasai region has risen from 28 to 68 in the past week, the outbreak has spread from two districts to four districts, and the death toll, which was 15 last week, has increased to 16.
