Istanbul University, which revoked Ekrem İmamoğlu's bachelor's degree on the grounds of "absence" and "clear error" after he was arrested and suspended from his position as part of a corruption investigation against the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, also declared his master's degree invalid.
İstanbul University (IU) canceled Ekrem İmamoğlu's master's degree and diploma due to the failure to meet the "undergraduate graduation" condition and the "deficiency in conditions" stated in the entry into student status.
The Board of Directors of the IU Institute of Social Sciences decided, in its meeting on July 24, that İmamoğlu, who enrolled in the Master's Program in Human Resources Management (full-time education), was deemed to have invalidated his master's graduation and diploma based on the decision taken at the University Board of Directors' meeting on March 18, 2025, citing the failure to meet the "undergraduate graduation" condition published in the Official Gazette dated July 6, 1987, and numbered 19509, and the "deficiency in conditions" stated in the entry into student status.
GRADUATION THESIS WILL BE REMOVED FROM THE NATIONAL THESIS CENTER
The board also decided to delete İmamoğlu's graduation information from the Academic Record System (AKSİS) and update it through the Higher Education Information System (YÖKSİS), as well as to remove the graduation thesis from the National Thesis Center of the Higher Education Council.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Following reports to the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office regarding the alleged forgery of İBB President Ekrem İmamoğlu's undergraduate diploma and findings in a report prepared by the Higher Education Council regarding the diploma's forgery, an investigation was initiated for the crime of "forgery of official documents."
In a letter sent to Istanbul University by the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, it was requested that necessary actions be taken as soon as possible to ensure that the operations to be established based on İmamoğlu's diploma are not contrary to the law.
Istanbul University had also decided to revoke İmamoğlu's undergraduate diploma on March 18, citing "absence" and "clear error" as reasons. İmamoğlu's diploma information was removed from the university's database on May 6.
The Istanbul 59th Criminal Court of First Instance accepted the indictment prepared against İmamoğlu for the crime of "forgery of official documents in a chain manner" with a prison sentence of 2 years and 6 months to 8 years and 9 months, and ruled that the hearing would take place on September 11.
