Tesla CEO Elon Musk, in his speech at the World Economic Forum, made predictions that artificial intelligence will be smarter than all of humanity within 5 years, considering the pace of its advancement. Musk also emphasized that artificial intelligence will transform the global economy by overcoming energy-related barriers.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk stated that considering the pace of progress, artificial intelligence will likely be smarter than all of humanity in about 5 years.
The world's richest businessman Musk spoke at a session during the 56th Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) held this year in the town of Davos, Switzerland.
"THERE WILL BE MORE ROBOTS THAN HUMANS"
Musk, who said that the widespread availability of free artificial intelligence and robotic technology would lead to unprecedented growth in the global economy, evaluated, "My prediction is that we will produce so many robots in the field of artificial intelligence that they will meet all human needs and there will be more robots than humans."
Musk expressed that he is generally optimistic about the future and believes that we are heading towards a future filled with abundance, stating that "we are living in the most interesting period in history."
Musk expressed that aging is a solvable problem, saying, "If people live for a very long time, there could be a risk of society becoming rigid, with everything remaining in place, and this could become suffocating with the loss of vitality. But do I think we will find ways to extend life and even reverse aging? I think that is very likely."
"THE BIGGEST OBSTACLE IN FRONT OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IS ENERGY"
Musk pointed out that the effects of artificial intelligence will be broad, noting that companies are looking for as many customers as possible and that the costs of artificial intelligence continue to decrease.
Musk stated that the biggest obstacle to the use of artificial intelligence is electricity, saying, "While the production rate of artificial intelligence chips is increasing exponentially, the growth rate of online electricity purchases is at most 3-4% per year. Very soon, perhaps by the end of this year, we will produce more chips than we can use."
Musk, however, noted that China's electricity production has shown a tremendous increase, mentioning the country's capacity in solar energy.
Musk pointed out that customs duties for solar energy in the U.S. are very high, emphasizing that this artificially increases the cost of solar energy usage.
Musk stated that the sun is the largest energy source, saying, "Therefore, one of the projects we will undertake with SpaceX in a few years is to launch artificial intelligence satellites powered by solar energy."
"WE THINK WE WILL START SELLING HUMANOID ROBOTS BY THE END OF NEXT YEAR"
Musk mentioned that humanoid robots are developing rapidly, explaining that there are some "Optimus" robots performing simple tasks in Tesla factories.
Musk stated that by the end of this year, the robots will likely be able to perform more complex tasks, saying, "By the end of next year, we think we will start selling humanoid robots to the public."
Musk noted that the Robotaxi service Tesla has launched in several cities will become widespread in the U.S. by the end of the year, adding that they hope to receive approval for fully autonomous driving in Europe next month and a similar timeline in China.
"ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE WILL BE SMARTER THAN ALL OF HUMANITY IN 5 YEARS"
Musk explained that considering the pace of progress, he believes that by the end of this year or at the latest by the end of next year, artificial intelligence will be smarter than any human, stating, "Probably in 5 years, artificial intelligence will be smarter than all of humanity."
Musk emphasized that everyone should look to the future with optimism and excitement, saying, "I think it is better to be optimistic and be wrong than to be pessimistic about the quality of life and be right."
