Emine Erdoğan, the wife of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Chair of the United Nations (UN) High-Level Advisory Board on Sustainable Development Goals, delivered a speech at the "Special Event for International Zero Waste Day on March 30" organized by the UN today under the theme "Towards Zero Waste in Fashion and Textiles."
"ITEMS HAVE A PLACE IN OUR LIVES WITH THEIR SPIRITUAL DIMENSIONS"
Addressing the UN Headquarters, Erdoğan highlighted the role of clothing in human life under the topic of zero waste. A snippet from Erdoğan's speech is as follows: "Items have also had a place in our lives with their spiritual dimensions. For example, in the past, clothes would change hands among relatives, neighbors, and friends. Their usage periods would span generations. Clothes worn on special occasions would become historical documents of a memory, turning into heirlooms. A shawl would gain significance and become priceless simply because it was wrapped around a mother's neck. It is common to give a garment a brand new spirit with small alterations and wear it for many years. In short, a zero waste lifestyle was the norm."
