On November 27, armed opposition groups led by HTS began operations, advancing to the capital Damascus in 12 days and ending the 61-year Baath regime. Following the arrival of the opposition in Damascus, Bashar al-Assad fled to Russia in a hurry with his family. It was claimed that Assad left for Russia with a fortune of 135 billion dollars. After Assad's refuge, critical statements came from Russia. Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov left unanswered the question of when Assad arrived in Russia and announced that there were no plans for a meeting between President Putin and Assad in the official schedules. BRITISH CLAIM OF 2 BILLION DOLLARS NET WEALTHNotable claims have come from the British regarding the fugitive Assad family. Bashar al-Assad is currently in Russia with his wife Asma and their three children Hafez (24), Karim (21), and Zain (22). The British Daily Mail reported that the Foreign Office estimates that Assad and his wife have a net wealth of approximately 2 billion dollars, spread across various bank accounts, shell companies, and real estate ventures worldwide, and therefore likely still have access to a large amount of money. Daily Mail also claimed that the Assad family owns at least 20 apartments in Moscow, valued at approximately 40 million dollars, and that Assad's uncle, Mohammed Makhlouf, purchased 18 luxury apartments in a private complex in Moscow over the last decade, where ministers from the Russian government and wealthy Russian businessmen also reside. It is believed that the Assads live in one of these apartments or in a secure location allocated by Putin. THE ASSAD FAMILY IS NOT FOREIGN TO RUSSIAEven if the Assad family had not lived in Russia before, they have long been familiar with Moscow. Assad has visited Russia many times to meet with Putin and other Russian officials. Assad's eldest son Hafez also studied at a university in Russia and even wrote his thesis in Russian. Last year, Assad's wife Asma came to Russia to attend her son's graduation ceremony.
