The intermittent snowfall seen throughout the day in Istanbul continues to increase its impact in some districts. The snowflakes that have covered the megacity in white have created postcard-like images.
For the past two days, snow has intermittently affected the city of Istanbul, and in the evening, it began to intensify in some districts.
BLIZZARD DOMINATES THE ANATOLIAN SIDE Especially in the districts of Ümraniye, Beykoz, Pendik, and Maltepe on the Anatolian side, the snow is sometimes giving way to a blizzard. Children and families are enjoying the snow that covers the higher elevations, taking advantage of the school holiday.
Citizens who came to Fatih Korusu Park in Otağtepe, Beykoz, played snowball fights against the backdrop of the view of the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge. While some citizens preferred to walk in the snow, others took plenty of photos. In Maltepe, children enjoyed sliding down the hill with bags.
In Şile, the sudden snowfall covered especially the side streets with a white blanket. The snow, which also showed its effects on the main arteries, caused difficulties for drivers.
At the Kurtköy toll booths, a chain traffic accident involving three vehicles occurred due to the snowfall. The vehicles were damaged in the accident. While snow intermittently affected the districts of Sultangazi, Eyüpsultan, and Fatih on the European side, light rain continued in Silivri.
In Sultangazi, due to the cold, icicles formed on the awnings of some shops and the roofs of vehicles. In Fatih, the snow that covered the historical peninsula attracted the attention of local and foreign tourists with its picturesque scenery.
The Topkapi Palace, the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, and the Hagia Sophia were covered in snow, presenting postcard-like views. The snow-covered roofs of the Grand Bazaar and its surroundings were also captured in aerial photographs.
SNOWFALL CAUSED DIFFICULTIES FOR DRIVERS The snowfall also brought some negative consequences. Some vehicles were unable to move on the snow-covered roads. Vehicles traveling on Reşitpaşa Street in the Ferhatpaşa neighborhood of Ataşehir struggled to progress on the white-covered road. On 19 Mayıs Street, an IETT bus on the move got stuck on the slippery road due to the snowfall. Drivers who set out with their vehicles on the Şile Road near the Nevzat Demir Facilities tried to proceed cautiously due to the increasing snowfall.
It was observed that drivers on Tavukçu Road in Ümraniye had difficulty progressing with their vehicles sliding on the snow-covered road. Throughout the province, there was no disruption in traffic flow on the D-100 highway and the TEM highway. Citizens were seen to have turned to public transportation, taking warnings into account. According to the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB) Traffic map data, as of 11:45, the traffic density in the city was recorded at 31 percent. Additionally, due to adverse weather conditions, many IETT lines experienced cancellations, delays, and route changes.
A CAR SLIDING DOWN A HILL IN KAĞITHANE COLLIDED WITH A PARKED VEHICLE In Erbap Street, Harmantepe Neighborhood, a car with license plate 34 NK 7255, driven by Abdulkadir Ç, slid down the hill due to the snow. The out-of-control vehicle collided with a parked car with license plate 34 PR 1826. After the accident, both vehicles continued to slide on the road for a while, causing damage. Upon notification, police and medical teams were dispatched to the area. The police closed the road to traffic while the medical team took the driver to the hospital for precautionary measures. The fire brigade team that came to intervene in the accident also had difficulty entering the street.
