FDNY Chief John Esposito stated, "7 firefighters were injured in the explosion, 5 of whom suffered burns on their hands and faces. The burns are considered serious but do not pose a life-threatening risk. They were taken to the hospital with the rapid response of our emergency services and were admitted to intensive care." Authorities indicated that the investigation into the incident is ongoing and that the explosion may have been caused by a malfunction in the fuel system.
