The fire started on Wednesday afternoon and quickly affected an area of 100 square kilometers. Significant damage occurred, especially in regions known for wine production and popular with holidaymakers.
Firefighting teams are intervening in the fire from both land and air. However, operations had to be suspended until morning because planes could not operate after dark.
Ten people have been injured in the fire, two of whom are in serious condition. There are also reports of missing persons.
Extreme temperatures are contributing to the fire's growth. The air temperature is expected to rise to 45 degrees, which could be the hottest day of the year. In the morning hours, the skies over Limassol turned red.
The cause of the fire is still unknown. However, officials stated that strong winds have played a role in spreading the flames.
The Cyprus government has requested assistance from the European Union. It has been announced that Spain will send two firefighting planes, and Jordan will also provide support.
The country is also experiencing a serious drought problem. The Kouris Dam, which is very close to the fire area, currently has only a 15.5% fill rate.
