After France, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Malta, another European Union country is taking steps to recognize Palestine. The Portuguese government announced that it will officially discuss the recognition of the State of Palestine.
PORTUGAL TAKES A STEP TO RECOGNIZE THE STATE OF PALESTINE
Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro announced that Portugal will officially recognize Palestine in October. Montenegro's announcement came just hours after the German Foreign Minister stated that the process of recognizing Palestine "should start now." Along with Germany, France, the United Kingdom, and Canada, Portugal has joined many Western countries in taking a stand against the US-Israel on this issue.
148 OF THE 193 UN MEMBERS HAVE RECOGNIZED PALESTINE AS A STATE
Out of the 193 members of the United Nations, 148 have recognized Palestine as a state. This step by Portugal could particularly accelerate the process of international recognition of Palestine among Western countries. The recognition of the State of Palestine is seen as an important development supporting efforts for a two-state solution to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
CALL TO RECOGNIZE THE STATE OF PALESTINE FROM 15 COUNTRIES
The foreign ministers of Andorra, Australia, Canada, Finland, France, Iceland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Malta, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, San Marino, Slovenia, and Spain made a joint statement titled 'New York Call' regarding the Israeli-Palestinian issue. In the statement, the countries described the recognition of the State of Palestine as a fundamental step in realizing the two-state solution, stating, "As a fundamental step that needs to be taken towards a two-state solution, we invite all states that have not yet taken steps in this direction, to join this call, including those that have already recognized the State of Palestine or expressed their willingness or positive assessment to do so."
