In the 31st week of the Trendyol Super League, the match played between Sivasspor and Fenerbahçe was ignited by the home team's banner stating "Natural is normal birth." The banner included the phrase "Unless medically necessary, cesarean is not natural."
STATEMENT FROM THE MINISTRY
Following the developments, the Ministry of Health made a statement regarding the "Normal Birth Action Plan." In the statement, it was noted that cesarean rates have been increasing worldwide; while the cesarean rate in Brazil reaches around 55%, in the USA it is 31%, and in Europe, it varies from country to country.
"61 OUT OF EVERY 100 BIRTHS ARE CESAREAN"
The statement indicated that the cesarean rate in Turkey has significantly increased in recent years, stating, "In the early 2000s, the cesarean rate was around 20%, and by 2013 it exceeded 50%. Currently, 61 out of every 100 births in Turkey are cesarean. This rate is well above the world average."
"WHO RECOMMENDS THAT IT BE PERFORMED ONLY WHEN NECESSARY FOR MOTHER AND BABY HEALTH"
The statement recorded: "According to the Clinical Non-Intervention Guidelines to Reduce Unnecessary Cesareans, the World Health Organization (WHO) has set a target of maintaining cesarean rates around 10-15%, recommending that each country evaluate its own situation and that cesareans be performed only when necessary for both mother and baby health. The Ministry of Health has prepared the 'Normal Birth Action Plan' to prevent cesareans performed unless medically necessary, promote normal birth, and protect mother-baby health. The plan aims to train healthcare personnel, increase awareness in the community, improve the quality of birth services, and monitor birth processes with digital support. One of the main goals of this plan is to strengthen the role of midwives in normal birth processes and to spread mother-friendly hospital standards."
"CESAREAN IS PERFORMED WHEN NECESSARY BY DOCTOR'S DECISION"
The statement noted that normal birth is a physiological process, while cesarean birth is a surgical method used only in cases of medical necessity, and that scientific research in the health field clearly demonstrates the positive effects of normal birth on mother and baby health. It was stated that normal birth is considered a part of the natural process and provides many advantages for both mother and baby after a healthy pregnancy. The statement said, "Cesarean is performed only when the risks of normal birth are greater than the risks of cesarean, in order to save the lives of the mother and baby. Cesarean is a surgical intervention and is performed when deemed necessary by the doctor."
"AFTER NORMAL BIRTH, ONE CAN RETURN TO DAILY LIFE IN A SHORTER TIME"
The statement also included the following: "Thanks to the hormones released by the body during the birth process, breast milk comes in immediately after birth, and the baby can be breastfed. One can return to daily life in a shorter time after normal birth. Since there is no incision or damage to the uterus of the mother who gives birth normally, she can also have subsequent births normally. It does not pose a risk for abdominal surgeries she may undergo later in life. Normal birth does not limit the number of births. The hospital stay is shorter compared to cesarean surgery. Normal birth helps to expel a large portion of the fluid in the baby's lungs as it passes through the birth canal, making it easier for the baby to breathe. The likelihood of respiratory distress in the baby is lower compared to cesarean surgery. In normal birth, complications related to general anesthesia are not encountered."
