Ford Motor has agreed to pay a fine of 165 million dollars for failing to comply with recall requirements in an agreement with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
In a statement from NHTSA, it was noted that Ford Motor did not timely recall vehicles with faulty rearview cameras and did not provide information as required by the relevant law. SECOND LARGEST FINE IN HISTORYIn the statement regarding the agreement reached with the company, it was emphasized that the 165 million dollar fine accepted by Ford Motor is the second highest fine in the agency's history. The statement mentioned that under the agreement, Ford will make a 65 million dollar upfront payment, the company will incur 45 million dollars in expenses for performance obligations, and 55 million dollars of the amount has been deferred. It was stated in the announcement that NHTSA additionally requested Ford to review its recall decision-making process and make necessary changes, and the company will be asked to accelerate the pace of its recall decisions. AN INVESTIGATION HAD BEEN LAUNCHEDFollowing Ford's recall of more than 600,000 vehicles due to a rear camera issue in 2020, NHTSA launched an investigation in the summer of 2021 to determine whether the company recalled its vehicles in a timely manner. NHTSA alleged that Ford provided incorrect or incomplete information, failed to submit timely reports for other recalls, and did not fully comply with the requirement for vehicle recall information to be publicly available, while Ford stated that it disagreed with NHTSA's assessment.
