In the third hearing of the case concerning Remzi Sati (48) and his son Muhammed Sati (15), who were killed and then burned in a pickup truck in the Sur district of Diyarbakır in 2025, gendarmerie personnel M.A., who testified, said that a hearing- and speech-impaired person he encountered at the scene explained with hand and arm gestures that the vehicle had been set on fire.
On May 19, 2025, in an empty plot near the rural Köprübaşı Neighborhood of Sur district, people who saw the pickup truck with license plate 21 GH 662 on fire reported the situation to the 112 Emergency Call Center. The fire was extinguished by fire crews. The lifeless bodies of Remzi Sati and his son Muhammed were found in the pickup. It was determined that father and son had been shot dead with a handgun and then burned with a flammable substance. Within the scope of the investigation into the incident, Ali Mert İldeniz (25), his father A.İ. (58), İ.K. (40), M.D. (26), M.K. (44), O.K. (44), and A.Ö. (32) were taken into custody. O.K. and A.Ö. were released pending trial without detention, while the other suspects were arrested. The first hearing of the case against the defendants was held on April 7 at the Diyarbakır 7th Heavy Penal Court. At the hearing, it was decided that Ali Mert İldeniz would remain in detention, and that the other detained defendants A.İ., İ.K., M.D., and M.K. would be released under the judicial control measure of a ban on leaving the country.
CALLED THEM UNDER THE PRETEXT OF A LOST COW
The indictment prepared by the Diyarbakır Chief Public Prosecutor's Office and accepted by the 7th Heavy Penal Court included the confessions of defendant Ali Mert İldeniz. In his statement, İldeniz said that he had a feud with the deceased Remzi Sati over animal buying and selling, that he made a plan to kill the deceased, and that on the day of the incident he called the father and son to the area with a 'lost cow' scenario. İldeniz, who admitted that after an argument he fired a handgun and shot the father and son, stated that to destroy evidence he poured cologne on the vehicle and set it on fire, and that to mislead the investigation he sent a message from the deceased's phone to another defendant.
In the indictment, it was assessed that, despite the defendant's statement that he 'used cologne,' the burning was carried out with a strong flammable substance such as gasoline, because the bodies were charred and had turned to carbon. In forensic reports, it was noted that gunshot residue findings were found on the clothing of some suspects, that the suspects turned off their phones at the time of the incident, or that base station records coincided with the crime scene. In the indictment, it was stated that when the file was evaluated, it was understood that the suspects, in a unity of thought and action, killed Remzi Sati and his son Muhammed by shooting and burning them with premeditation and monstrous intent, and it was requested that they be sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment twice separately for the crime of 'intentional killing.'
At the third hearing of the case held at the Diyarbakır 7th Heavy Penal Court, detained defendant Ali Mert İldeniz attended via SEGBİS, along with the parties' lawyers, lawyers from the Ministry of Family and Social Services, and some witnesses. The defendants being tried without detention were not present at the hearing. In the prosecutor's opinion, it was requested that the defendants without detention be acquitted; that M.K., on whose clothing swab traces were found, and Ali Mert İldeniz be sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment separately for killing Remzi Sati and his son; and that Ali Mert İldeniz also be punished for the crime of possessing an unlicensed weapon.
HE SIGNALED THAT THEY POURED GASOLINE
Gendarmerie personnel M.A., who testified as a witness at the hearing, stated that he was in the first team to go to the scene and said: 'When we first went in the morning, the vehicle had turned to ashes and there were tire tracks. I saw a piece of flesh there. Remzi's body had turned to ashes. That piece of flesh also belonged to his child. Later, while we were conducting examinations at the scene with my teammates, we saw a mute man a few meters away. This person pointed at the burning car and gestured with his hands and arms, indicating, "They poured gasoline, a fire broke out," and said, "I saw it with my own eyes." That mute citizen was alone and there was no one with him. His animals were also further ahead. I asked him with hand and arm gestures, "How many people were there?" but he did not say anything clear. Later, while working at the scene, there were many tire tracks. I do not remember that a report was drawn up regarding these hand and arm gestures,' he said.
Hearing- and speech-impaired N.A., who was heard as a witness accompanied by an interpreter who is a sign language teacher, was tried to be communicated with through sign language. The interpreter said that the hand and arm movements made by the gendarmerie personnel at the hearing corresponded to sign language.
HEARING ADJOURNED TO JANUARY
The Sati family and the lawyers of the Ministry of Family and Social Services, who joined the case, requested that the defendants being tried without detention be re-arrested and tried in detention. The defendants' lawyers requested time to make a defense against the opinion. The court panel decided that Ali Mert İldeniz would remain in detention, that the judicial control decisions regarding the defendants without detention would continue, and that time would be given to make a defense against the opinion, and ruled that the hearing be adjourned to January 19, 2027.
