In Germany, the Social Democratic Party (SPD), the Greens, and the Christian Democratic Union/Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU) parties have agreed to hold early elections on February 23, 2025, following the collapse of the government. Chancellor Olaf Scholz is expected to receive a vote of confidence.

After the dissolution of the government in Germany, the Social Democratic Party (SPD), the Greens, and the main opposition Christian Democratic Union (CDU/CSU) parties agreed to hold early elections on February 23, 2025.

GERMANY GOES TO THE POLLS ON FEBRUARY 23

Following the collapse of the coalition government formed by the Social Democratic Party (SPD), the Greens, and the Free Democratic Party (FDP), which is referred to as the "traffic light coalition" due to its colors, attention has turned to early elections. According to German media, the parliamentary groups of the Social Democratic Party, the Greens, and the conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU/CSU) in the opposition have agreed to hold early elections on February 23. However, the election date must be approved by President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

CONFIDENCE VOTE MAY BE HELD ON DECEMBER 16

In order to proceed with early elections, Chancellor Olaf Scholz must first request a vote of confidence from the Federal Diet (Bundestag). If the Chancellor fails to obtain a vote of confidence, the President must dissolve the Parliament within 21 days, and elections must be held within 60 days. It is reported that the vote of confidence could take place on December 16.

THE GOVERNMENT HAD COLLAPSED

Meanwhile, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz dismissed Free Democratic Party (FDP) Finance Minister Christian Lindner last week after a prolonged disagreement over how to close the multi-billion Euro gap in the budget. The coalition government collapsed after the FDP withdrew its ministers from the government.
