Halit Şahin, who has been operating a tea house in Osmaniye for 33 years, draws attention with the sign he hung on the window of his workplace that says, "Talking politics is prohibited here."
PROHIBITED POLITICS IN THE TEA HOUSE Halit Şahin, who has been a tradesman in the tea house located in the İstiklal neighborhood of Osmaniye for many years, hung a sign on the window and walls of his workplace that says, "Talking politics is prohibited here" in order to provide a peaceful environment away from political discussions. Stating that politics polarizes people, Halit Şahin said, "There is no civilized political discussion. Since there isn't, I had this sign made so that they wouldn't upset each other." The sign on the window of the tea house has attracted the attention of citizens, while some customers support this practice, and some citizens say they will talk politics everywhere.
"WHEN POLITICS ENTERS, PEOPLE UPSET EACH OTHER" Halit Şahin, the owner of the business, said, "When politics started to be discussed in my workplace, people were hurting each other, so I hung this sign so that people wouldn't get hurt." He continued, "I have been a tradesman in the tea house for 33 years, and I have been running this place for 15 years. When politics enters here, they upset each other. I saw it wasn't working, so I had this sign made. We are all from the same hometown, we are under the same flag, but when it comes to party A or party B, there is sympathy, and that's why they hurt each other, so I had this sign made. I don't want politics. Citizens are responding positively, asking why I had it made, and I tell them they are hurting each other. We are like brothers, uncles, and nephews, but when you get into politics, you don't recognize each other, you hurt each other. There is no civilized political discussion. Since there isn't, I had this sign made so that they wouldn't upset each other," he said.
Mehmet Köse, who trades near the tea house, said that when politics is discussed, it gets loud, stating, "As tradesmen, we couldn't stop the noise and fights. Our tradesman friend wrote such a sign, and it has been very beneficial. At least, there is no hurtful political discussion inside, which is very nice," he said.
İbrahim Vayıs, who says he loves talking politics, stated, "Well, he can write as much as he wants and set as many rules as he wants; I can talk politics here, I can do it anywhere in the Republic of Turkey, I can do it in the mountains and in the town. Politics is my job anyway," he said.
