President of the European Council Antonio Costa and President of the EU Commission Ursula von der Leyen made their first visit to Syria since the fall of the Assad regime.
CRITICAL VISIT TO DAMASCUS
Costa and Leyen met with Syrian President Ahmed Shara at the People's Palace in the capital, Damascus. The meeting addressed cooperation between Syria and the EU, the reconstruction of Syria, stability in Syria and the region, and issues concerning Syrian refugees in Europe.
The parties emphasized the importance of preserving Syria's territorial integrity and the necessity of expanding a political dialogue that will serve the interests of the Syrian people and support the construction of a balanced and constructive partnership with the EU.
