In Brazil, a 28-year-old husband was sentenced to 20 years in prison for killing his wife after allegedly biting her finger during sexual intercourse. Brazilian Marcos Vinicius Paulino surrendered the day after killing his 38-year-old wife, Tatiele de Cassia dos Reis Goncalves, on April 14. Police found the woman's lifeless body in their family apartment located in Caconde, São Paulo state. According to local media, Paulino brutally stabbed his wife 59 times. The Public Security Department stated, "When police arrived at the scene, they found wounds on the victim's chest and neck caused by knife stabs." Paulino told investigators that he attacked Tatiele after she changed her clothes and fell asleep. The 28-year-old killer fled the bloody crime scene and turned himself in at the police station the next morning. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison after a hearing on Wednesday. His first-time offense was considered a mitigating factor, but he received the maximum sentence possible due to the triple qualified homicide (committed for trivial reasons, carried out cruelly, and using methods that prevented the victim from defending herself). Caconde Chief Prosecutor Alfredo Eduardo Ferreira Rossatti stated, "The highest level of punishment that justice could impose was given." During the trial, the defense attorney argued that his client acted under intense emotional pressure and had been abused by the victim. According to attorney Allison Santos, Paulino had taken psychiatric medication and used cocaine on the day of the incident. The defense requested a reduced sentence under privileged homicide, arguing that his confession was made to assist the investigation and that he understood the seriousness of his actions. However, the jury did not accept this defense. The defense announced that they would appeal the decision to reduce the sentence. Investigators observed that the killer showed no signs of remorse after the murder. An investigator stated, "He showed no remorse; his behavior was not normal." Angry locals reacted to the sentence on social media. One user commented, "How is this justice? 20 years is nothing for him. He took a life. The victim did not get a chance to live for another 20 years. Shame on these lawyers, what a disgrace." Another person lamented, "Only 20 years, how is this justice?" A third user wrote, "This is still an insufficient sentence for the monstrosity he committed."
