Turkey is discussing new footage of Ekrem İmamoğlu's clandestine meeting with "organization leaders and secret safes" at a hotel in Beşiktaş on October 12, 2024. The contents of the suitcases seen in the footage have sparked significant debate. Following the discussions, Özgür Çelik revealed what was inside the secret suitcases in front of the cameras.
SUSPECTS GATHERED AT THE HOTEL
Footage emerged of Ekrem İmamoğlu, who was removed from his position as the Mayor of Istanbul after his arrest, at a hotel in Beşiktaş on October 12, 2024. According to the investigation file conducted by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, the suspects identified as organization leaders and cash safes, Tuncay Yılmaz, Ertan Yıldız, Adem Soytekin, Fatih Keleş, and Hüseyin Köksal, met with İmamoğlu at the hotel.
CAMERAS WERE BLOCKED
In the footage, Ekrem İmamoğlu is clearly visible, while moments before the meeting, security personnel from the İBB Private Office, Çağlar Türkmen, was seen covering the security cameras that monitor the hotel's interior with black tape.
SUITCASES SPARKED A GREAT DEBATE
The footage showed the suspect security personnel Çağlar Türkmen leaving the hotel with suitcases in hand. The moments when Çağlar Türkmen exited the hotel with two suitcases led to the debate, "What was in the suitcases?"
ÖZGÜR ÇELİK EXPLAINED IN FRONT OF THE CAMERAS
Speaking about the camera blocking issue, CHP Istanbul Provincial Chairman Özgür Çelik said, "Let’s clarify the camera blocking issue. The Turkish public will remember that during the two elections in 2019, footage of Ekrem İmamoğlu's meeting with a journalist at a hotel was leaked. Recently, footage of Ekrem İmamoğlu dining at a fish restaurant on a snowy day in Istanbul was also presented to the public. After these incidents, İmamoğlu's security team felt the need to block cameras only in the areas where meetings were held. If all the cameras in the hotel had been blocked, there would have been no footage of Mr. İmamoğlu entering and exiting. It is entirely normal to turn off cameras in the rooms where meetings are held within the scope of personal data protection. It is natural for someone whose footage has been leaked in another hotel and restaurant to take such a precaution for security reasons," he stated.
THERE ARE SIGNAL JAMMERS IN THE SUITCASES
Regarding the footage of the suitcase carrying, Çelik also mentioned that there were signal jammers inside the suitcases.
Opening the two suitcases he brought with him, Çelik showed the signal jammers to the public, saying, "What is in these suitcases? The suitcases contain signal jamming devices. These devices are used by security teams during meetings. Why are they transported in a suitcase? Because these devices weigh 20-25 kilograms and are difficult to carry by hand. For this reason, security teams use suitcases," he expressed.
